In search of modesty...

Not so long ago, we went swimsuit shopping for our young daughters. It wasn't as easy as years before when they were little when we just picked their favorite color or character suit and we were done.

Now that each person has their own personality it was difficult to find one that suited both their mind and body alike. We would have tried at least a dozen suits from different stores and yet picking one to buy wasn't easy.

In fact I was shocked by the way the suits were made, two low in the front or too deep in the back or strategically cut or midriff baring or string bikinis, anything and everything except some modest cut.

Now don't get me wrong; I am not against modern wear. But when 'modern' replaces modest that bothers me. These itsy bitsy teeny weeny pieces may be the latest trend, but who cares. Give me a decent piece that is comfort and does cover up at the same time.

No, it is not a culture clash. I do not claim saree is better than swimsuit for playing in the water. And at the same time, I am not for walking around in underwear in public either. If we can have fun and comfort without compromising on modesty, I am all for it.

Finally after hours of trying so many kinds, just when we were about to give up, Landsend came to our rescue. It has beautiful collections which are approved by moms and daughters alike. I admit we got lucky this year finding a decent swimwear; looking forward to put it to more use while the season lasts...

For next season however, we better start looking out for an affordable private beach. Something tells me finding a private beach might be easier than finding a modest wear...

Thanks Bikram, for your loving wishes!

Good for you, you could escape by sending your sister in for shopping... Eager to see how you will handle it when you have a daughter of your own :)

Oh don't get me started.

I'm with you on this. I don't like to see grown women wondering around in next to nothing and think it even worse when I see children 'dressed' like this - call me old fashioned if you like but that's my opinion AND it's not just swimwear either I hate to see children wondering around in crop-tops and t-shirts with inappropriate slogans - A three-year-old turned up at school wearing a t-shirt with 'sex kitten' on it - what were her parents thinking?

Aaah..the world has changed!
Long back there were people who couldnt afford to buy clothes and they used to walk around in loin clothes in India. That could become a fashion now.Bikinis are modifications of that.
The less cloth the dress has, the more expensive it is !
Some women love to show around. Some even walk around nude.We dont have to follow that.It is up to us.

In matters of taste, move with the current
In matters of principle, stand like rock.
This is the general dictum. But it seems that in all matters of taste one cannot move with the trend.Instead of blindly aping what others do, moms have a role to play atleast during impressionable ages of kids.A ticklish issue indeed.
What goes in US is not necessarily acceptable in India for children of Indian origin keeping the cultural differences.

all other times our clinic would be sombre.. but whenever we go for shopping, some patient would wait for us.. all the more happy for me.. I would start the rhetoric... make it fast ,.patient is waiting.. nu..

Nice post! Reading this reminds me of what my Dad said once..."The poor wear rags out of no choice, but some rich wear next to nothing, coz they were meant to be beggers but got lucky!"

Good one. Luckily, I have sons :). But, I face this problem when I buy swimwear for myself. I am also for modesty and not too much show, and in Indian setting people ogle hopelessly. Have you seen the aunty type swimwear with a frock thingy at the bottom. That is what is most common and comfortable here :).

I completely understand you . It was a great relief when my daughter's school introduced their own swimwear which is beautiful ,stylish as well as comfortable.Earlier i use to have difficulty in searching one such wear as the modest ones are 'not in demand'.

when i saw girls in movies or in real who hate to be called behen ji among the bold environment,i always feel sorry for them,i would love to be called behen ji,i will take it as a pride or compliment,

i think there are some certain boundaries in ever thing and a bell rings inside when we cross it,accept it or ignore ,it is up to us,

lovely sharing dear,god bless
